Pelosi: President of her own country?

Posted by Stephen on March 31, 2007

The President of California is headed to Syria despite the objections of the United States.

That seems to be the only way to explain the defiant actions of the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Fox News reported that Pelosi toured Jerusalem Saturday alongside a congressional delegation that included Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress.

Pelosi, who has no foreign policy experience, seems determined to insert herself in a highly sensitive process. For the first time in years the Bush administration recently took a first step to engage Syria and Iran in discussions over the war in Iraq and left the encounter in a very delicate state.

Syria is a long time state sponsor of terror who is promoting the overthrow of the democratically elected government in Lebanon.  A CNN report stated that the United States has accused Syria of aiding the Sunni insurgency in western Iraq with weapons and fighters. Syria also is accused of supporting the militant extremist groups Hezbollah, a Shiite political party and militia, and Hamas.

Concerned that Pelosi could send a mixed message to a country determined to support the fall of the U.S. in Iraq, the White House attempted to discourage the Pelosi decision to travel to Syria.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told Fox that the speaker should consider the message being sent to U.S. allies by such actions adding that Pelosi “should take a step back and think about the message that it sends…I don’t know what she is trying to accomplish.”

“This is a county that is a state sponsor of terror, one that is trying to disrupt the Senora government in Lebanon and one that is allowing foreign fighters to flow into Iraq from its borders,” Perino said.

Pelosi has shown little regard for comments from the White House.

Pelosi’s spokesman, Brendan Daly, released a statement to CNN that said: “As recommended by the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan delegation led by Speaker Pelosi intends to discuss a wide range of security issues affecting the United States and the Middle East with representatives of governments in the region, including Syria.”

The planned trip by Pelosi is a continued attempt by Democrats to undermine the White House in a self described attempt to change the direction of the events in the Middle East. The House of Representatives passed a funding plan that tied funds for American troops in the region to a date certain for pulling out of Iraq.

Pelosi is bound and determined to do what she has determined is best for the U.S. in Iraq despite questionable precedent for her conclusions. Citizens are left hoping that this form of interference can have a positive impact despite concerns voiced from U.S. leaders.
