Romney receives his own set of endrosements

Posted by Stephen on February 1, 2008

While Senator John McCain touts endorsements from the likes of the New York Times and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mitt Romney received support from the Denver Post and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum who immediately went to bat Friday for Romney after announcing his support for the former Massachusetts governor.

After releasing a statement praising Romney for sticking to conservative principles, Santorum went on the Laura Ingraham Show to blast rival John McCain.

“This guy really gets it,” Santorum said of Romney. “He understands [national security]. He has a depth of knowledge about it. He knows what it means to be a commander-in-chief under these circumstances, as John McCain effectively does in fighting the war overseas. But just as importantly is fighting the war here at home, where John McCain has had a horrible record in protecting us here at home.”

The two GOP rivals are battling to prove which is more conservative. Many poll bearers for the party and leading conservative talk show hosts are solidly behind Romney. More to the point for some, they are blatantly against McCain.

Ann Coulter repeatedly said she’d rather have Hillary Clinton in the Oval Office than McCain.

“Either way it’s going to be a Democrat,” she told FOX News. “I’d be going for the more conservative Democrat if I go for Hillary over John McCain.”

Santorum aptly stated that “if you’re a Republican in the broadest sense, there is only one place to go right now and that’s Mitt Romney.”
