The End of an Era: George Steinbrenner dies at 80

Posted by Stephen on July 13, 2010

The passing of a legend and the end of an era will be among the list of tag lines connected to the end of the life of New York’s most identifiable sports figure, George M. Steinbrenner III.

Bombastic, volatile, passionate, fanatical, mean, loving, philanthropic….all things New York; these are just some of the adjectives used to describe the “Boss,” Mr. Steinbrenner. He bought the Yankees in 1973 and returned the then rag tag team to greatness. He wasn’t just the Yankees. For a period of time, he was the face of baseball.

It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80,” the Steinbrenner family said in a statement.

“He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family — his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren.

“He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”

Like him or not, under the rules of baseball he built winners. In 38 seasons as owner, he sent teams to the post season 19 times and won it all an incredible 7 times. He was a giant in the world of sports.
