Governor McDonnell Congratulates Virginia School Districts on Accreditation Progress

Posted by Stephen on September 17, 2010

119 of 132 School Divisions Reach Full Accreditation; Up from 117 Last year

Unaccredited Schools Fall from 25 Last Year to 19; Schools Accredited with Warning Drops to 15, Down from 17 in 2009, and 54 in 2008

RICHMOND- Governor McDonnell today issued the following statement congratulating Virginia School Divisions their success in achieving full accreditation.

“This is positive news for Virginia’s public schools. Providing an increasingly excellent educational foundation for Virginia’s children is one of the top priorities of my administration…

I am pleased that 119 school divisions have received full accreditation, and congratulate Superintendent Pat Wright, along with all of Virginia’s superintendents, school board members, principals and teachers for their dedication and success in teaching our children. However, while we celebrate this achievement, we must be cognizant that there is still much work to be done to ensure that all our children receive the world class education they deserve.

While the number of fully accredited school districts has grown from last year, we will not, and cannot, be satisfied until every school in Virginia is accredited. I want nothing less than 100%. By setting lofty goals and demanding high standards, we will give all Virginia’s students the quality education crucial to compete for jobs in the global economy.

We must continue to improve opportunities for more STEM education, expand career and vocational training, implement better fiscal literacy, and make our SOL’s even better. Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson, Superintendent Wright, the Department of Education, leaders in the General Assembly and our Administration are committed to continuing to work together until every school in every district receives full accreditation, and every student in every zip code gets the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”
